Moving Pictures Of African-American Dads With Their Kids

By Claire-Marine

Poignant and striking, the Canadian photographer Zun Lee’s series called “Father Figure», explores paternity without any filter in black and white photographs. For more than four years, the photographer followed several African-American fathers in their daily lives to immortalize their precious and intimate relationship with their children. “Rather than accumulate a series of portraits, my aim was to build trusted relationships and immerse myself in these father’s lives to get a sense of how they negotiate their daily spheres not just as fathers but also as black men», he says. Through this sensitive and necessary photo essay, it is also a poetic way to always give more visibility to people of colours’ lives.

Zun Lee is currently exhibiting “Father Figure» at the Bronx Documentary Center until March 31. Follow him on Instagram.
